Located in the Battlefields Region of Northern KwaZulu Natal, the town of Vryheid has a history
filled with turmoil and blunder. Many battles from both the Zulu and Boer wars were fought
within close proxomity to the town and at one stage Vryheid was declared the Capital of The new Republic,
which was formed by the Boers on the 5th August 1884 after British action led to discontentment.
Today the town is mainly agriculturally and mining oriented. A number of game and wilderness reserves in the area
offer excellent game viewing opportunities.
