East Griqualand Region Of KwaZulu Natal
Situated in the south-western corner of KwaZulu-Natal,
the East Griqualand region resembles an expertly crafted
tapestry where rolling landscapes in hues of green and blue are set against a
dramatic backdrop of the Southern Drakensberg Mountain range.
Originally settled by the Griquas, this beautiful land holds a remarkable historical
significance, with many of the small towns, named after famous leaders, paying
tribute to their heritage with monuments and quaint museums.
The area is
predominantly an agricultural stronghold with stock farming at the forefront.
Farmlands are lush and boast flourishing herds of cattle and sheep. Enjoying a
somewhat colonial lifestyle, the residents share close relationships and
often gather at the local Polo Club on a Sunday to watch family and friends, mounted
on muscle ripped ponies, thundering up field, turf flying, in pursuit of a tiny
white ball. Other sporting clubs include tennis, squash, bowls, cricket, hockey,
rugby, cycling and road running and visiting teams and enthusiasts are welcomed
with a charming hospitality and warmth.
The natural setting and balmy weather
renders the area perfectly suited to outdoor living. Feel the
warm morning sunshine on your face as you head out for the day, armed with a
walking stick and a smile. Inspired by nature, hiking is a popular pastime and crisp air and breathtaking sights
await you. Explore fields and ravines or visit an ancient San Rock Art site. With
an abundance of freshwater rivers and dams, fantastic fly-fishing opportunities
are available.
Enthusiastic anglers don their waders in the hopes of landing a
trophy sized Rainbow or Brown trout. Crystal Spring Dam, which is located in
the Mount Currie Nature Reserve, is a favourite spot to catch bluegill, bass,
carp and trout. Water sports and boating activities are also available. The
reserve is administered by the KwaZulu Natal Parks Board and covers
approximately 1700 ha. Visitors are also able to partake in bird-watching, game
viewing, hiking, 4x4 trails, walking and kayaking. Other reserves in the area include the
Wildfred Bauer and the Mountain Lake Nature Reserves.
For the more adventurous
try your hand at paragliding where you can leap from a cliff face and soar over
the fields and towns gaining a new perspective of this diverse region. A round
of golf can be enjoyed on unique courses set amongst some of the most beautiful
scenery in the region. The town of Kokstad boasts the only 18 hole course in the region.
Call in at working farms where children are able to interact with farm animals or go on a pony ride. Craft
shops, museums, local eateries and historical building are also well worth a
visit.
