Midlands Region Of KwaZulu Natal
Linking the tropical coastal regions to the formidable
mountain ranges of the Drakensberg, the KwaZulu Natal Midlands is an artist’s
canvas of undulating hills, indigenous forest glades and crystal streams. The
patchwork of farmlands fused with natural vegetation creates a pallet of gold
and green where horses and cattle graze lazily.
A fly fisherman’s paradise, the
natural streams and dams are brimming with trophy trout and bass and are sure
to impress even the most experienced anglers.
Exuding a traditional Colonial atmosphere, life in the Midlands is relaxed and stresses
of urban living long forgotten. Quaint country pubs and hotels extend a warm
welcome and play host to locals and visitors alike. The Midlands Meander
tourist route winds its way throughout the region and is a preview into the
lives of the local residents. Here visitors are able to view and purchase a
variety of arts and crafts as well as sample local country fare, admire the unique
dwellings and experience historical encounters. For the more adventurous, the region offers numerous
outdoor activities such as horseriding, walking, abseiling, rock climbing, forest hiking, mountain biking, golfing,
hang-gliding and more… The area is an ideal destination for people seeking art and photographic safaris. Crisp clear
air sharpens the landscapes and highlights the smallest details whilst time
spent in the natural environment will leave you feeling refreshed and at peace.
Midmar Dam situated on the outskirts of the town of Howick,
is a wilderness area administered by KwaZulu Wildlife. The enormous dam covers
4600ha and visitors are able to participate in boating, water skiing, sailing,
and windsurfing or simply enjoy a family picnic at one of the many picnic sites
available. Cottages and chalets are also available for guests wanting to stay
over. The Howick Falls (where the Umgeni river plunges 300ft into a deep blue
pool below), is an awe inspiring site and leaves you with a feeling of vertigo
as you peer at the tumbling white water from the safety of a viewers deck
surrounded by barriers.
