South Coast Region Of KwaZulu Natal
The vibrant South Coast of KwaZulu Natal is a
subtropical holiday hotspot offering a myriad of activities and sights to behold.
Also known as the HibiscusCoast, this sandal and sarong area
is rich in indigenous subtropical flora and fauna and boasts a prolific bird
life attracting visitors from all walks of life. A culmination of ethnic
influences including African, Indian and European results in a local community
that is warm, friendly and altogether laid back. Strangers to the area are
welcomed whole heartedly and are immediately drawn in to the fun loving
lifestyle of the residents.
Golden white beaches offer recreational delight and
during the winter months, the renowned sardine run draws in hundreds of curious
onlookers desperate to experience this strange phenomenon, as the ocean comes
alive in a splashing frenzy of silver and blue. Five kilometres off shore is
the famous Aliwal Shoal - a fossilised sand dune which attracts a huge variety of fish
and Ragged-Tooth sharks. Scuba divers from all areas frequent this spot to witness and
photograph this amazing underwater metropolis.
The warm Indian Ocean is a magnet to surfers and bathers
alike as they revel in the salty expanse whilst on land children build towering
sandcastles and lovers walk hand in hand.
Seaside Villages and larger towns offer up
a buffet of attractions and activities leaving visitors overwhelmed for choice.
From adrenalin junkies to the very laid back there is something for everyone’s
taste.
A Golfer’s utopia, the region exhibits numerous emerald courses where
one can tee off amidst coastal bush and sand dunes, all against a panoramic backdrop
of the Indian Ocean. Nature lovers will not be
disappointed as there are several nature reserves dotted throughout the region.
Duiker, zebra, wildebeest and other such animals can be spotted as well as a
variety of birds such as the majestic
African Fish Eagle and the Knysna Loerie. Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, (named
after the Oribi antelope which is rarely seen) offers numerous game viewing,
hiking, photographic and bird watching opportunities.
After a fun filled day,
call in at one of the many exquisite restaurants or local pubs and enjoy a range
of excellent cuisine and fine wine, all the while soaking in the infectious atmosphere.
Nightclubs and discos are 'pumping' and are a great way to round up an evening amongst friends.
For those a little more conservative, curl up with a good book at one of the many
accommodation venues on offer.
